Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785–1871)

Autograph Letter Signed in French – Algiers / French Foreign Legion / Belgium – circa 1835

Important autograph letter signed by Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, the celebrated German writer, traveller and landscape designer, addressed to Mr Lecoq, Belgian Consul in Algiers.

In this letter, written entirely in French, Pückler personally recommends to the Consul a Sergeant Major of the French Foreign Legion, described as a man of very good conduct, who wishes to enter Belgian service after completing his military engagement.

Pückler states that he had already given the soldier a letter addressed to Baron d’Arnim in Brussels, and also asks Lecoq to take an interest in his case.

The Baron mentioned can be identified as Heinrich Friedrich von Arnim-Heinrichsdorff-Werbelow (1791–1859), a Prussian diplomat who served as Prussian envoy in Brussels from 1831 to 1841.

The context corresponds particularly well with Pückler-Muskau’s stay in Algeria in 1835. He arrived in Algiers in January 1835 and moved within European diplomatic and military circles there. His account Semilasso in Afrika specifically mentions Mr Lecoq, his connections with Belgian representatives in Algiers, as well as Lecoq’s mission to Morocco.

The letter therefore provides an interesting historical testimony to the connections between Pückler-Muskau, the French Foreign Legion, and Belgian and Prussian diplomatic networks in Algiers and Brussels during the 1830s.

The document was formerly identified and described in an old collection note as a letter from Pückler-Muskau to Mr Lecoq, Belgian Consul in Algiers, recommending “a Sergeant Major of the Foreign Legion, a brave fellow.”

Proposed dating: Algiers, circa 1835.

As the manuscript itself is undated, this dating is proposed on the basis of its historical context and the individuals mentioned.

Original autograph manuscript with Pückler-Muskau’s signature and large characteristic flourish.

Condition: age-related browning of the paper. Folds and other signs of age are visible. The manuscript remains perfectly legible. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
