This is a very good New Old Stock example of a complete Schwinn Approved Sting-Ray 16" Krate Series speedometer set in full working order, part number 08 453, for bicycles with 16" front wheels, made for Schwinn by Huret of France. The speedometer has been fully rebuilt, lubed, polished, waxed and reassembled, and is in good working order with an excellent shine. (The camera tripod is visible in Photo 8.) The contents are all complete, intact and working fine.

This was made for a Schwinn Krate with 16" front wheel, not a 20" Sting-Ray wheel, but this can be converted for Sting-Ray use by replacing the 23½" Krate drive cable with a 21½" Sting-Ray cable, and by replacing the 16" drive hub with a 20" drive hub. The speedo head and hardware kit are correct for either bike. (For Manta-Ray use, substitute a 22½" cable and a 24" or 26" drive hub.)

This is a great finishing touch for your Schwinn Krate. The speedometer head is 2 3/8" wide, 2¼" high and 1 5/8" deep. It has a polished chrome rim, glass face, and chrome housing, with white numbers on a black dial, and a bright orange pointer. All chrome has been polished to restore the shine, and waxed to keep it that way. There is no accumulated mileage; it's just passing 0000.1.

This kit includes:

  • Schwinn Sting-Ray Speedometer Head, Schwinn 08 461 (Cleaned, lubed, rebuilt, bench-tested, zero miles)
  • Collar Nut, Schwinn 08 481
  • Mounting Bracket, Schwinn 08 480, with carriage bolt and clamp nut
  • Drive cable: Schwinn 08 473, 23½" long from collar to collar, for bikes with extended front forks
  • Speedometer drive hub: Schwinn 08 468, 1:1.2 output ratio; for bolt-on 16" wheels
  • Hardware Kit, Schwinn 08 499, including:
    • One 5/16" axle bushing (silver)
    • One 3/8" axle bushing (black)
    • Three installation washers, to be used to clear either the axle cone nut or inner fork, as needed.
    • One 1 5/8" diameter foam dust shield
  • One 3¾" plastic drive cable tie strap

The original box is a bit rough and shows some relabeling with grease pencil. I have gone over this kit in detail, cleaned and polished it where needed, and lubed the mechanism. It's all complete, bench-tested and ready to install on your vintage Krate. Enjoy!
