Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Blair “Paddy” Mayne was a soldier, solicitor and international rugby player from Newtownards, County Down, who became one of the most distinguished commanders of the early Special Air Service. Before the Second World War, he represented Ireland and toured South Africa with the British Lions. After serving with the Commandos, he joined the SAS in 1941 and helped establish its reputation through daring attacks on enemy airfields in North Africa.

Following David Stirling’s capture in 1943, Mayne took command of 1st SAS, leading its men through campaigns in Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order and three bars, he combined personal courage with exceptional battlefield judgement. His legacy rests on his decisive contribution to the SAS’s survival and development. After the war, he returned to legal work before dying in a car accident in 1955.
