This fantastic, 19th century German Stein measures approx. 9” tall (to the top of the finial on the pewter lid) and 4” in diameter at the base. It features a wonderful, hand colored decoration on the front featuring an image of a handsome, young man wearing lederhosen with his right arm around the shoulders of a beautiful, young woman. In his right hand the young man holds a stein full of beer and in his left hand he holds a guitar. Text flanking the couple reads “Wer nicht liebt, trinkt und singt, es nie zur wahren Freude bringt" ("He who does not love, drink, and sing will never find real pleasure").

    The Stein is unmarked by the manufacturer or the decorator but does have a wonderful lithophane in the base depicting a tavern scene with a handsome, young man attempting to woo a beautiful, young woman. The Stein retains its original pewter lid with a figural thumb-latch in the form of a Gnome carrying stoneware bottles of beer.

     This very rare and very beautiful 19th century German Lidded Beer Stein is in excellent condition - the glaze and the colors are bright and beautiful with no chips, stains, repairs or significant surface wear of any kind to either the porcelain body or the pewter lid. Overall the Stein is very well preserved and displays beautifully.
