How to Care for Your Wool Rug

Proper care will help your wool rug maintain its natural softness, colour and appearance for years to come.

1. Vacuum Regularly

Vacuum your rug regularly using a suitable vacuum cleaner on a gentle setting. This helps remove dust, dirt and loose fibres before they become embedded in the pile.

Tip: New wool rugs may naturally shed some loose fibres during the first few weeks. Regular gentle vacuuming will help reduce this over time.

2. Deal With Spills Immediately

Wool is naturally stain resistant, but spills should still be treated as soon as possible.

  • Gently blot the spill with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth.
  • Work from the outside of the spill towards the centre.
  • Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, as this can push the liquid deeper into the fibres and damage the pile.
  • Allow the area to dry naturally.

3. Avoid Excess Water

Do not soak the rug or use excessive amounts of water. Wool can retain moisture, and prolonged dampness may cause odours, staining or damage to the fibres.

4. Use Gentle Cleaning Methods

For small marks, use a suitable wool-rug cleaning product and always follow the product instructions. Test any cleaning solution on a small, hidden area first to ensure it does not affect the colour or texture.

5. Professional Cleaning

For deep cleaning or stubborn stains, professional rug cleaning is recommended. Choose a cleaner experienced in caring for 100% wool rugs.

6. Protect From Direct Sunlight

Avoid placing the rug in strong, direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Continuous exposure can cause natural or dyed colours to fade over time.

7. Rotate the Rug

Rotate your rug every few months to help distribute everyday foot traffic and furniture pressure evenly. This can help prevent uneven wear and maintain a consistent appearance.

8. Protect Against Furniture Marks

Use suitable furniture protectors beneath heavy furniture. Avoid dragging furniture across the rug, as this may damage the fibres or backing.

9. Keep Away From Excessive Moisture

Keep the rug away from areas where it may remain damp for long periods. If the rug becomes wet, gently blot the moisture and allow it to dry completely in a well-ventilated area.

10. Use a Rug Grip

For rugs placed on hard flooring, using a suitable anti-slip rug grip is recommended. This helps keep the rug securely in place and can also provide additional protection to the rug.

Important Care Note

Wool is a natural fibre, so slight variations in colour, texture and pile are normal and add to the character of the rug. Shedding of loose wool fibres is also natural, particularly when the rug is new, and generally reduces with regular gentle vacuuming.
