Offered here is an original vintage Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) titled in the negative:
“H. 237 – Bishop Street and Honolulu Harbor”
(Kodak Hawaii logo at lower right)
This striking black-and-white street scene captures Bishop Street looking toward Honolulu Harbor, framed by graceful coconut palms and substantial commercial buildings. A large ocean-going passenger or cargo ship is docked at the harbor in the distance, while period automobiles travel along the street. A lone pedestrian walks toward the waterfront, adding wonderful human scale and atmosphere.
Bishop Street has long served as the financial and commercial heart of Honolulu. During the Territorial era of Hawaii (1900–1959), the street housed banks, shipping offices, insurance companies, and major trading firms tied to sugar, pineapple, and Pacific shipping interests.
Honolulu Harbor was one of the most important ports in the Pacific, serving as a strategic refueling and supply point for trans-Pacific steamship routes connecting the United States, Asia, and Oceania. By the 1920s and 1930s, the harbor was bustling with Matson liners and commercial freighters that carried passengers, mail, and agricultural exports.
The architecture visible on Bishop Street reflects early 20th-century Mediterranean and classical revival influences, commonly used in Honolulu’s commercial district. The automobiles in the scene suggest a likely date in the 1930s, prior to World War Two.
