Charming original oil painting on stretched canvas, signed A. Rutgers at the lower right and additionally identified “A. Rutgers” on the wooden stretcher on the reverse.

The painting depicts a picturesque old European village street with traditional gabled architecture, figures gathered along the street, chickens in the foreground and a tall church steeple rising in the distance. Warm golden tones and loose, textured brushwork give the scene an atmospheric Old World quality.

The painting is housed in a substantial, highly ornate gold-tone frame with elaborate scrolling, floral and foliate decoration. The frame has significant age-related damage, particularly across the upper section and at the upper corners. Despite the frame condition, its distressed appearance gives the piece considerable antique decorative character.

Measurements: Overall framed size is approximately 17" tall × 15" wide. Stretched canvas measures approximately 12" tall × 9.5" wide.

This would work particularly well in a traditional, English country, European, maximalist or Old World interior.

Painting: Good vintage condition overall. The canvas remains mounted on its original-style wooden stretcher and displays well. There is age-related surface wear and discoloration consistent with an older oil painting. Please examine photographs closely.

Frame: Poor to fair condition with substantial damage and losses. There are large areas of missing decorative composition/gesso along the top, including significant losses at the upper left and upper right corners, along with cracking, separation, chips, finish loss and general wear throughout. The frame is being sold in its existing condition and the damage is clearly shown in the photographs.
