THE STORY OF THUYA BURL

Thuya Burl comes from Tetraclinis articulata, an aromatic conifer native to the western Mediterranean and particularly associated with Morocco and North Africa.

Unlike ordinary straight-grained lumber, Thuya is prized for the dense, irregular figure found in its burl and root wood. When cut and polished, the wood can reveal swirling grain, small eyes and colors ranging from golden brown to deep reddish brown.

Thuya woodworking has a particularly strong association with Essaouira, Morocco, where generations of artisans have used this beautifully figured material for decorative boxes, marquetry and other fine handcrafted objects.

Thuya is also naturally aromatic. Even seasoned wood can release its characteristic warm, cedar-like fragrance when freshly cut or sanded.

Most importantly, the figure was created naturally by the tree. It isn't printed, painted or manufactured.

Every piece is different. No second Thuya Burl blank will reproduce exactly the grain and figure of this fountain pen.
