Late 1920s Frock Godet Dress Sewing Pattern

Professionally Printed Physical Sewing Pattern

This Late 1920s Frock sewing pattern reproduces a Butterick design released in June 1929. Originally described as a “Frock for Misses’ and Women,” the dress has a closely fitted hip line that opens into a graceful flared skirt through multiple inserted godets.

Three variations provide short-sleeved, sleeveless, and long-sleeved options with distinctive draped necklines, lace accents, shoulder ties, and contrasting fabric treatments.

This listing is for a professionally printed physical sewing pattern. No digital files are included.

Pattern Details

Historical Size

This pattern is available in one historical size only:

The original age designation is part of Butterick’s 1929 sizing system and is not equivalent to a modern ready-to-wear size. Select and evaluate the pattern using the stated bust and hip measurements.

French fitting seams provide enough additional material to let the garment out approximately 1 1/2 inches through the hips if needed. Experienced sewists may also resize or alter the pattern for other measurements.

Three Frock Variations

View A: Features short cap sleeves, an asymmetrical draped neckline, decorative lace banding, and a shoulder tie.

View B: Provides a sleeveless option with a distinctive draped neckline. It may combine printed and plain fabrics, plain material with all-over lace, or a main fabric with harmonizing georgette.

View C: Offers long sleeves and a simpler neckline treatment. Butterick recommended satin crepe with the reverse side of the material used for subtle contrast.

Important Skirt-Length Information

The original pattern includes no hem allowance on the skirt. Determine the desired finished length and planned hem treatment before buying or cutting fabric.

Allow additional material when lengthening the skirt or working with directional prints, border designs, lace, or fabrics that require matching.

Fabric Requirements

The materials summary specifies approximately 4 1/2 yards of 36-inch-wide material without contrast. Consult the included view-specific fabric chart before purchasing material because requirements vary according to the selected view and fabric direction.

View A suggestions: Silk crepe, georgette, crepe de chine, crepe Roma, silk or cotton voile, satin, sheer rayon or Celanese, and satin crepe, with lace banding.

View B suggestions: Georgette, crepe Roma, silk or cotton voile, sheer rayon or Celanese, crepe de chine, silk crepe, satin, taffeta, satin crepe, or radium. Suggested treatments include printed fabric with a harmonizing plain material, plain fabric with all-over lace, or a main material with coordinating georgette.

View C suggestionzim: Satin crepe, using the reverse side of the same material for contrast.

When choosing a modern equivalent, prioritize drape and weight. Lightweight crepes, voile, georgette, satin, and other fluid dress fabrics will best reproduce the soft neckline treatments and flowing godet skirt.

What Is Included

The pattern pieces are carefully redrawn to emulate the original Butterick shapes, markings, and proportions while providing a clean, usable full-size sewing pattern.

Skill Level: 4/5 – Advanced Intermediate

This rating reflects the close hip fitting, accurate insertion of multiple godets, bias-bound edges, shirring, narrow finishing, and careful handling of fluid or sheer fabrics.

Depending on the selected view, construction may also involve lace application, decorative ties, contrasting sections, and delicate edge finishes. Sewists should be comfortable interpreting vintage instructions and working with period construction methods.

Historical Background

Pattern 2665 appeared in June 1929 as women’s fashion began moving away from the familiar mid-1920s flapper silhouette. Waistlines were starting to rise, hemlines were becoming longer, and closely fitted hip lines increasingly opened into fuller lower skirts.

The godets, draped neckline, lace treatments, and fluid fabric suggestions place this frock directly within the transition between Jazz Age fashion and the longer silhouettes of the early 1930s.
