This is a beautiful heavy impasto landscape oil painting by New Mexico artist Tom Holland.  It was painted in 2006, which is when I purchased it from the Chimayo Trading Post in Rancho de Taos, New Mexico.  It portrays the small village of historic Truchas on the High Road to Taos.  The Sangre de Christo Mountains are in the background.

The title of the painting is "Las Truchas Early Spring".  Truchas is at the 8,000 foot high level.  "Straddling a high ridge, the community began as the Nuestra Señora del Rosario, San Fernando y Santiago del Rio de las Truchas Grant, a Spanish land grant in 1754 and, due to its geography and location, remained a relatively unchanged outpost over the centuries." [Wikipedia]

From the Artist's Statement when he was alive:  "I am a native New Mexico painter.  I enjoy and celebrate the light and landscape of northern New Mexico.  I paint on site, usually in a single period of two or three hours."

The artist was also a cabinet maker, and he created the wood frame and hand-carved the beautiful decorative motifs on the frame.

[The following is from a Gemini AI search, which found the following information in an article in Southwest Arts Magazine]

"Thomas E. Holland (1936–2017) was a native New Mexican landscape painter and educator known for his expressive plein-air oil paintings of northern New Mexico’s terrain, architecture, and light.

Background & Early Life

  • Roots: Born in Española, New Mexico, Holland was a third-generation native who spent his early years across Española, Albuquerque, and Silver City before pursuing his formal education out of state.

  • Education & Career: He earned his MFA from Indiana University—one of the earliest university MFA programs in the country—and spent years as an art professor, finishing his 17-year teaching tenure at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Artistic Style & Return to New Mexico

  • Plein-Air Realism: After stepping away from academia and working in New York and New Jersey, Holland returned to New Mexico in the early 1990s, settling first in Las Cruces and eventually in a 19th-century adobe home in Chimayó.

  • Focus & Subject Matter: His later career shifted from studio abstraction to closely observed, open-air oil paintings. He focused primarily on the unique shifting light, eroded rock formations, and valleys surrounding Chimayó, Truchas, the Chama River, Abiquiu, and historic local churches, alongside intimacy-driven portraits of family and friends."
