Up for sale is a truly unique and hard-to-find piece of Soviet engineering from the Cold War era — the 193ChS (193ЧС) electromechanical primary clock, manufactured in April 1970 (stamped "4 70" on the back housing alongside the original factory OTK quality stamp). I’ve tried searching for another piece like this online, but it seems to be an extremely rare industrial or military instrument.
What makes this clock fascinating is its hybrid design. It’s not just a digital or standard electric clock. Inside this heavy, compact cast-metal body beats a purely mechanical, high-precision military heart. Interestingly, the model index 193ChS suggests it shares its design roots and caliber with the famous rugged Soviet Zlatoust diver watches. The electric part here is used strictly for an automatic power-reserve rewind. You don't need a key to wind it — you just plug it into the wall, an internal mechanism quietly rewinds the mainspring, and the clock runs flawlessly on its own. Even if you unplug it, the mechanical balance wheel keeps ticking away, and it will hold its precise time for well over 24 hours.
Speaking of its condition, the clock is in great vintage shape and is 100% operational. The mechanical movement is very accurate, keeping tight and reliable time. If you hold it close to your ear, you can hear that classic, steady, and very quiet ticking sound. The black military-style dial features luminous hands and markers that still glow nicely in the dark. On the front panel, there is a manual time adjuster and a very robust toggle switch protected by a heavy-duty screw-on metal cap — a classic Soviet design detail meant to prevent accidental switching in high-vibration or tactical environments.
The clock is quite compact, measuring roughly 10 x 10 x 7 cm, but it is incredibly solid and heavy for its size, weighing about 1.5 kg. At some point in its life, it was neatly customized for domestic desktop use with a long vintage Soviet power cable and plug. It currently runs on a 220V grid, but since the electricity only triggers the mechanical rewinding motor, it will easily work on US 110V/120V power as well if you simply change the plug or use an adapter.
This is a beautiful, heavy-duty industrial artifact that would make a perfect steampunk desk clock or a centerpiece for any Soviet militaria and tech collection. Please check the photos for all the details and stamps. It will be packed ultra-securely for worldwide tracked shipping.
