A wonderful and rare silver and rose gold sliding lipstick holder. The outer case layered with 18ct gold on silver pierced with various woodland animals and applied four cabochon rubies (I think there were 5 but there is a small hole where I think one is absent).
Boucheron appear to have made various models, mainly floral, but this exact example is pierced with badgers - with Boucheron known for their ‘Animaux de Collection’ (the Boucheron Bestiary). Since 1866, their Parisian workshops have specialized in rendering intricately chiseled, truer-than-life woodland and exotic creatures directly into fine jewelry and vanity items.
The detachable base is initialled JM and there is a slight bruise here. The edge of the outer rim is engraved Boucheron, Paris along with a pattern number. The pierced dome at the top is on a slider allows the lipstick to slide up and down depending on how much is left.
This really is a stunning vanity piece made by one of the leading Parisian jewellers of the era. Similar examples are listed as sold at over £2000 so someone will grab a bargain here. Having looked at the marks I don’t think the outer case is solid 18k gold but rather a layer pressed against another layer of silver. A really terrific piece.
