A rare Indian colonial silver drinking mug by the esteemed Calcutta firm of Pittar, Lattey & Co, a partnership founded in 1835 by Arthur Pittar who had resided and worked in Calcutta since 1821 when he arrived with his brother (?) and Robert John Lattey who had worked as an assistant to Arthur since 1828. The partnerships would continue with the addition of John Pittar and Arthur Pittar Lattey in 1840, until it was dissolved and continued as Lattey Brothers & Co from 1842.
The business did not only focus on the silver and jewellery trade but also the trade in diamonds. They opened a diamond trading centre in London showing the value they placed on this aspect of the business.
This christening cup is closely based on the Victorian staple of christening cups made in London. On the style, design and manufacture it could easily be confused for a London made example by makers such as Barnards. This following of fashions from home and makers to furnish this would be an important part of the trade of silver in India.
The interior retains its light lemon gilding and apart from a small bruise to the foot and a small bruise to the engraved cartouche, it is in excellent antique condition. A lovely piece for collectors of Indian silver.
