WHY COLLECTORS WANT THIS ONE
South Of The Border - 48 Lively Latin Favorites is a 1968 Reader's Digest box, and it is exactly the kind of set that made the Reader's Digest music division worth paying attention to: a large, well-programmed survey of a style, pressed properly and packaged to last. Across four LPs it runs through the Latin dance repertoire that had swept North American ballrooms and living rooms - rumbas, tangos, cha-chas, mambos, sambas and boleros, plus the big south-of-the-border standards everyone can hum - in bright, full orchestral and combo arrangements built for dancing or for background listening.
These sets were sold by mail rather than in record shops, and they arrived as a proper package: a heavy slipcase, individual paper sleeves and a program booklet with notes on the music. Forty-eight tracks in one box is a lot of Latin music for the money, and it still works beautifully as party or dinner-party listening.
