This a very nice uncirculated scarce silver Irish florin dated 1937. As can be seen from the table below ( courtesy of Numista ) it has - along with the 1934 coin - the lowest mintage of this series at just 150,000.

The coin has been professionally graded by NGC as UNC Details in view of past light cleaning as evidenced by faint hairlines.

Apart from the fabled 1943 florin, this year has the lowest number ( 8 ) of MS grades in the NGC Population Report, and it is very rarely offered for sale in anything other than the lower grades.

Irish pre-decimal silver coins are becoming increasingly popular and with just 1088 florins in total graded by NGC their scarcity is only now becoming apparent.

Comments

The reverse design of the Irish coins features a series of animals important to Ireland's predominantly agricultural economy.
The animal chosen for the florin is a salmon. The fishing industry was (and is) very important to the Irish economy. The salmon represents both marine and farm fisheries.

The flóirín / florin comes from the Latin word florence, coins minted in Florence, and featuring a fleur-de-lis, symbol of the city. The French term, florin, was kept in English for England and the dependencies of the British Crown, while it was translated into guilder for the old currency of the Netherlands, the gulden, translated into French as florin.
