Fred Williamson, the president of the New York Central Railroad in the 1930's, envisioned a totally streamlined train, something never before achieved. Henry Dreyfuss, the immensely talented pioneer of American industrial design, was given the commission and the Mercury train debuted in 1936. By 1938 Dreyfuss and the NY Central gave the HUDSON J3-a to a now conscious train traveling public. Perhaps the most striking locomotive designed during the 30's, the workhorse that pulled the 20th Century Limited, was a radical departure from the "bathtub" form of the Mercury. We've replicated innumerable details from the original . . . Scullin disc driving wheels, and Timken roller bearings from the running gear as well as every sleek line that Dreyfuss called out. Tin toy locomotives have been immensely popular for over 100 years. We've selected what we believe to be the most outstanding locomotive ever designed and painstakingly reproduced every detail . . . a future heirloom and Restoration Hardware exclusive.
