- Music wind up "pigeon" on crank key. This is a vintage Japanese mid-century musical jewelry box (often manufactured by Sankyo or Toyo). These unique chests heavily featured "Around the World in 80 Days" as their signature theme song.

The "Pigeon" Winding Key

The embossed bird on your wind-up knob isn't a factory stamp—it is actually an ornamental T-bar replacement key or a vintage bird-shaped novelty winding key. Mid-century Japanese lacquer or fabric boxes utilized standard mechanical music box threads. 

The Oriental Jewelry Box Style

These boxes were popular export items from Japan during the 1950s through the 1970s. They traditionally come in two classic styles: Black Lacquer "Maki-e" Wood: Painted with striking gold accents, traditional landscapes, pagodas, or matching floral-and-bird motifs.

Interior Mechanism

When you wind that pigeon knob and open the lid, it triggers a standard 18-note mechanical drum playing Victor Young’s "Around the World in 80 Days". Most versions feature a small velvet-lined tray, an oval mirror, as the music plays. NOTE: IT CAN BE EASY TO OVER WIND THESE - BE CAREFUL (if you overwind it, likely can not be undone).
