Beautiful original antique portrait photograph of a fashionably dressed young girl, taken in Tiflis (present-day Tbilisi, Georgia) by the noted Armenian photographer Grigor Ter-Ghevondyants.
The girl is shown full-length in an elegant period outfit, wearing a large fashionable hat, a long coat with fur trim, and carrying a small structured handbag. The elaborate clothing and accessories make this an especially attractive example of children's fashion photography from the late Russian Imperial period.
The photographer's name and location are prominently embossed in gold beneath the image:
“Теръ-Гевондянцъ — Тифлисъ”
Ter-Ghevondyants — Tiflis
The reverse retains the photographer's elaborate original studio imprint:
“Photographie G. Ter-Ghevondyants, on Mikhailovsky Bridge in Tiflis.”
It also states:
“Фирма существует с 1864 года”
“The firm has existed since 1864.”
Grigor Ter-Ghevondyants was an important Armenian photographer active in Tiflis and is associated with portraits of many prominent members of the Armenian cultural and intellectual community.
The photograph is tentatively dated to circa 1895–1905, based on the mount, studio design and the girl's clothing.
A particularly charming and visually striking Imperial-era Tiflis portrait, combining early Caucasian photographic history with children's fashion.
