ACCORDING TO AUTHOR BERNIE GATES IN ONTARIO DECOYS II, "DAFOE WAS A GENERAL MERHANT IN AULTSVILLE, A TOWN THAT IS NOW UNDER THE WATER OF THE ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY. FORMER RESIDENTS OF AULTSVILLE RECALL THAT DAFOE MADE MODEL BOATS WHICH HE DISPLAYED IN HIS STORE WINDOW. AS WELL AS MODEL BOATS, DAFOE MADE DECOYS. SURPRISINGLY, HE USED A HEAVY AND DIFFICULT TO CARVE HARDWOOD FOR HIS MATERIAL. IN SPITE OF THIS, DAFOE MADE SOME FINE BLOCKS AND TOOK THE TROUBLE TO ADD CHIP CARVING AND WING OUTLINES(1)."
