A wonderfully atmospheric antique frame dating to approximately c. 1900–1910, with the rich, layered character that makes early frames so difficult to reproduce convincingly. The design reflects the transition from the late Victorian period into the Aesthetic Movement and early Art Nouveau, combining substantial Victorian-style ornament with increasingly stylized, organic botanical forms.

Constructed of wood with applied composition/gesso ornament, the frame features a particularly handsome deep green border accented with aged gold gilding and warm brown along the outer edge. The years have softened and distressed the finish beautifully, creating an authentic old-world appearance rather than the manufactured antiquing found on modern reproduction frames.

Overall measurements are approximately 18 1/2” x 14 1/2”, with a 12” x 16” artwork fit. The original glass remains in place.

Currently framed is an evocative woodland landscape depicting deer beneath towering trees with light breaking through the distant landscape. While this piece is being offered primarily for the antique frame, the print is included and frankly could not be better suited to it—the combination has a wonderful dark academia, old library, English country house and antique hunting lodge presence.

The original backing remains intact and has intentionally not been disturbed. Because of this, the artwork has not been removed to search for publisher, artist or other information that may be concealed on the reverse.

Condition is consistent with considerable age and includes surface wear, aged finish, cracking and areas of loss to the applied composition/gesso decoration. I have elected to leave the frame exactly as found rather than attempt restoration or disguise its age. Please examine all photographs closely as they are considered part of the condition reporting.

An exceptional decorative piece for a dark academia study, old-world library, moody maximalist room, English country interior or collected antique gallery wall—equally appealing displayed with the included woodland scene or repurposed around a favorite 12” x 16” work of art.
