Early color postcard depicting the Court House in Ludington, Michigan, identified by the caption on the front:

“Court House, Ludington, Mich.”

The image provides a detailed view of the substantial red-brick courthouse with its prominent central clock tower, steep rooflines, arched windows, contrasting stone trim, and landscaped grounds. The architectural view makes this an especially interesting piece of early Ludington civic history.

Historical & Postcard Context

This postcard was mailed in 1912, placing it firmly within the Golden Age of postcards and the Divided Back Era. During this period, postcards depicting courthouses, city halls, schools, libraries, churches, and other civic landmarks were widely produced as visual records of American communities.

The card is particularly useful as a dated historical view because its 1912 Ludington postmark confirms that this image was circulating during the early 20th century rather than merely depicting an older building on a later postcard.

Collector Interest

Courthouse postcards are a recognized branch of courthouse, government building, architectural, and local-history collecting. This example has several features that broaden its appeal: a substantial period courthouse, prominent clock tower, early Ludington subject matter, Michigan postal history, and a clearly dated 1912 usage.

The handwritten message and Ludington postmark also preserve the postcard's original function as personal correspondence rather than simply a souvenir kept unused.

Potential collecting themes include Ludington, Michigan history, Mason County area history, courthouses, government buildings, clock towers, civic architecture, Michigan postal history, 1912 postcards, and Golden Age postcards.

Condition

Postally used with handwritten message and address, 1912 Ludington postmark, and one-cent Franklin stamp still attached. Age-related corner and edge wear is visible, along with surface wear, light soiling/toning, small marks and spotting. There appears to be a noticeable vertical crease or bend through the image near the center-left portion of the card, with additional handling wear consistent with age and postal use. Pencil notations are present near the stamp area on the reverse.

Please use eBay’s magnifier/zoom feature to carefully inspect edge wear, corners, creases, surface issues, writing, stains, paper loss, album residue, discoloration, postal marks, and any other imperfections. Front and back scans are provided and are an important part of the condition description.
