This listing is for a bronze medal that was presented for the "FRED KAHAN AWARD OF MERIT" from the Jewish fraternal organization B'nai Zion. This is numbered 22 of the 100 of these medals that were made. This medal measures 2 1/2" across and weighs 137 grams.
Bnai Zion, founded in 1908, is the oldest Zionist fraternal organization in the United States and its name means Children of Zion. Fred Kahan was a former director of the Jewish National Fund. Bnai Zion used the resources of the Judah Magnes Museum of Berkeley, California to produce the Fred Kahan Award of Merit medal.
This medal was sculptured by Hal Reed with the assistance of Linda Neiman, from a design concept of Mel Wacks. The initials of the two sculptors can be found on the obverse, and the designer's initials are on the medal’s reverse. Obverse: Pictures the portrait of Fred Kahan and is captioned "FRED KAHAN AWARD OF MERIT".
Reverse: Pictures the logo of Bnai Zion, a menorah superimposed over a Star of David, surrounded by the name of the organization in English and Hebrew. Emanating from the central design are three spokes, which are inscribed "AMERICANISM / ZIONISM / FRATERNALISM". There are three scenes illustrating the various activities of Bnai Zion in Israel such as sports, agriculture and help for the aging.
