This is a vintage schoolgirl needlework sampler.

I don’t believe this is your typical 19th century sampler. I believe it dates sometime from the mid 20th century, circa 1940s or 50s based on the frame alone. I could be off though. Please use your judgment.

The frame measures 21 inches high x 17 inches wide (53.3 cm x 43.2 cm). The sampler measures 20 inches high x 16 inches wide (50.8 cm x 40.6 cm).

The piece is signed by the maker, Annabelle Prong of Wind Gap, Pennsylvania. I’m wondering if this is just a later version of an old sampler.

The linen fabric she did the cross stitch on is fairly wrinkled, though I’m not sure that that’s a big deal. There is though brown staining, though it’s mostly around the exterior, but there is some throughout the center area also. This may have been caused by foxing from cardboard behind it. It may also been have been caused by water coming underneath when they cleaned the glass. I’m just not sure.

Overall, it has a beautiful, colorful look about it and I think it was well done.
