Historical Background

　By the late Edo period, economic activity had expanded considerably, making it increasingly inconvenient to conduct larger transactions using only low-denomination coins. At the same time, the Tokugawa shogunate was facing serious financial difficulties.

　As part of the Tenpō Reforms, the Tenpō Tsūhō 100 Mon coin was introduced in 1835.

　The actual production cost of the coin was set far below its face value, allowing the shogunate to profit from the difference (seigniorage), which became an important source of government revenue.

💰 Actual Circulating Value

　Although the coin had an official face value of 100 Mon, it was unable to maintain that value in actual circulation.

　Soon after its introduction, it commonly circulated at around 80 Mon, and its market value declined even further over time.

　As a result, the Tenpō Tsūhō rarely circulated at its official face value.

　The Tenpō Tsūhō was produced at numerous mints throughout Japan.

　Major mint locations included:

• Edo (Asakusa)

• Akita

• Mito

• Sendai

• Aizu

• Nagasaki

• Satsuma

• and many other domain-operated mints.

　Because each mint employed its own dies and mint marks, numerous varieties exist. These differences include variations in calligraphy, mint marks, and other design details, making the Tenpō Tsūhō one of the most extensively classified Japanese coins.
