This listing is for a 1960 medal designed by Paul Vincze to commemorate Herbert Viscount Samuel (1870-1963), the first High Commissioner of Palestine. Herbert Louis Samuel was a British politician and the first Jew to serve as a Cabinet Minister. This medal was issued to celebrate Samuel's 90th birthday. It measures 2 1/4" across and weighs 92 grams. There is an example of this medal in the National Portrait Gallery in London, England. This medal was made of silvered bronze. 

Paul Vincze (1907-1994) was a Jewish-Hungarian sculptor and a designer of coins and medals. 

Obverse: Pictures the left-facing bust of Samuel and is captioned "HERBERT VISCOUNT SAMUEL O.M.' (Order of Merit, an honour bestowed on Samuel in 1958) / 90 / P. VINCZE / 1960"

Reverse: Pictures a figure, perhaps of Truth, writing in a book and holding a torch. It is captioned: "AMICVS SOCRATES SED MAGIS AMICA VERITAS" (Socrates is my friend but a greater friend is truth), from Roger Bacon's Opus Majus, and indirectly from Aristotle and "P. VINCZE".
