An impressive antiquarian volume, 'Johnson's Universal Encyclopedia: A Scientific and Popular Treasury of Useful Knowledge', Volume I, covering topics from 'A' to 'Cereus'. This is a revised edition, richly illustrated with maps, plans, and engravings. The book features a handsome half-leather binding with marbled boards and endpapers, showcasing intricate gold tooling and raised bands on the spine. Edited by Frederick A. P. Barnard, this volume was published by A. J. Johnson & Co. in New York and M. T. Brown in Davenport, IA, around 1889. Despite its age, the pages appear well-preserved with clear text and detailed illustrations, including a map of Africa and various scientific diagrams. There is a visible bookplate from 'Baker City High School' inside, indicating its previous ownership as a library book. The binding shows wear consistent with age, including rubbing, chipping to the spine ends, and some scuffing, but remains intact. A significant piece of 19th-century educational history.
