Vintage MCM Eugene Deutch (1904–1959) Pottery Blue Wood Covered Box Signed

Made in USA 1951.

Approx. 2” Tall x 6 1/4” Wide x 4 1/4” Deep, 1 lb 7.6 oz.

Rare, authentic piece of American mid-century studio art pottery by renowned Chicago modernist potter Eugene Deutch.

This rectangular earthenware vessel features a minimalist, biomorphic profile with rounded interior corners, showcasing a striking dark gunmetal metallic glaze across the basin interior.

The glaze gracefully flows into a lighter, frosted blue-grey halo around the top rim.

Includes its original, custom-carved wooden lid that sits flush over the rim, perfectly combining warm organic wood grain with industrial glazed ceramic—a quintessential hallmark of 1950s modernist design.

The unglazed bottom features a crisp, hand-incised signature reading "E. Deutch / 1951".

Born in Hungary, Deutch trained as a ceramist and studied under modernist sculptor Constantin Brâncusi in France. He moved to Chicago in 1927 (or 1928), immersing himself in the local Arts and Crafts community and taking classes at the The Art Institute of Chicago. He opened his first studio on Kilbourn Street in 1934, moving a year later to a workshop on North LaSalle Street.

Deutch’s highly sought postwar works are currently held in prominent permanent museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago.

Excellent used vintage condition. No chips, post-firing cracks, or major glaze loss. The interior basin floor shows light, localized surface scuffs/residues consistent with its 70+ year age and history of functional use. The wooden top retains a smooth, beautifully aged patina with some discoloration. Please review all photos for an accurate depiction of the item's condition. Normal wear from use and age.
