This listing is for an 1868 Deposit Receipt from L. H. Hershfield & Bro., Banksers of Helena, Montana. Lewis H. Hershfield was born in Poland around 1838 according to the 1870 United States Census. In the 1880 Census, he lists himself as well as his parents as being from "Rus. Poland" as the boundaries during that time period changed often. His wife, is listed as being from Prussia as were parents. His brother's name was Aaron and he was buried in the Home of Peace Jewish Cemetery in Helena. Lewis & Mary are buried in the Beth Olom Jewish Cemetery in Ridgewood, Queens County, New York.
This deposit slip measures 3 7/8" x 5 1/4". It lists four types of items: Gold Coin, Silver, Treasury Notes, and Checks.
This is in very good condition for its age with some stains and a small puncture hole near the center.
