This outstanding, period, Albumen Photograph measures approx. 2 1/8” by 3 1/2” and is mounted on its original, square cornered CDV Card Mount (overall size of card mount is 2 1/2" by 4 1/4").

    This is a very rare portrait of Booth which was likely taken when the young actor was performing in Boston. The Image is a near 3/4 length, standing portrait with Booth facing slightly to the left with his face and head turned directly at the camera. Booth wears a light colored overcoat with a black velvet collar. The Photograph carries the back mark of the Manchester, New Hampshire photographers Kimball & Childs. This photograph is listed as Gutman 4, according to the authoritative photography index created by Richard and Kellie O. Gutman, "John Wilkes Booth Himself" (Dover, Massachusetts: Hired Hand Press, 1979) and appears to be among the earliest portraits of Booth.
