JUST BACK FROM LEICA - AND WHY I SENT IT
I sent this lens to Leica in May 2026 to have dust removed from the internal elements. That is all. Dust is a fact of life on an M lens - they are not weather sealed, and a lens will collect some over time. Nothing was wrong with it, it focused and worked perfectly, and I simply wanted the glass properly clean rather than selling with dust and having unnecessary questions about it.
Leica carried out their full lens service: disassembly, clean optics, repair focusing mount, test images, overall adjustment, cleaning and final inspection. That is their standard work list and I have quoted it verbatim rather than paraphrasing.
A NOTE ON LEICA'S WORDING, BECAUSE IT MATTERS
You will notice the word 'repair' in that list. Before you read anything into it, look at the Leica completion certificate I have photographed here. It is Leica's standard pre-printed card, the one they issue with every service job, and its fixed text reads:
'Ihr Leica Produkt wurde instand gesetzt...'
'Your Leica product has been repaired...'
That is Leica's own translation, printed on the card, sent to every customer whatever the work. 'Instand gesetzt' means restored to working order. 'Repair' is simply Leica's vocabulary for having worked on something - it is not a fault report.
So, as far as I am aware nothing was faulty with this lens. I sent it in because I wanted the dust out of it. You have all the paperwork here and you are welcome to read it and judge for yourself, which is exactly why I have included it. The technician signed it off on 22 June 2026 and it was invoiced on the 7th of July. Everything comes with the lens: Leica's invoice (3091161420) and their completion certificate, hand-written and signed by the technician who did the work, naming the lens and this
exact serial number - 4818137. I have photographed both. I would rather you read
Leica's own words than take mine. The job cost me £377.27 .
What this means for you: the lens was with Leica from mid-May to the 7th of July - about two months - and cost £377.27. That time and that money are already spent. You get a lens that Leica have had apart, cleaned, adjusted, test-shot and signed off within the last month, with the paperwork.
I would rather say it than have you assume it: the certificate is a record of the work and a final inspection. It is not a warranty and I am not offering one. It tells you what was done, by whom, and when.
THE LENS
Leica's finest 35mm, and arguably the finest 35mm made by anyone.
Ten elements in five groups, four aspherical surfaces, six anomalous partial dispersion elements and a floating element. Apochromatic correction, which is what the APO in the name means and what separates this from the regular Summicron-M 35.
E39 filter. Screw-on hood. 320g. 6-bit coded. Made in Wetzlar. Focuses to 0.7m on the rangefinder and down to 0.30m in live view - the extra throw past the 0.7m detent is the APO's own party trick and the quickest way to tell it from the standard Summicron.
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE APO
This is the APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH, order code 11699. It is NOT the regular Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH (11673 / 11674), which is a different and much less expensive lens with a similar name. The two share a filter thread and a hood type, so they are easy to confuse. This one focuses past 0.7m down to 0.3m; the regular one does not.
