Antique Wooden Reel Stand/ Pincushion & Sewing Box

American* Circa 1900

This little sewing stand is carved of beautifully grained mahogany. It has 8 removable, wooden, button topped rods to hold spools of thread. The top has a pincushion and the bottom has a roomy drawer for holding sewing notions. One of the rods acts as a lock for the drawer which won't open until it's lifted (left back rod). It sits on 4 little ball feet and is in great condition. The only damage I see is a spot on the back of the round top that has been cracked and repaired at some point. The rest of the wood is glossy and free of dings or scratches. The pincushion has a patterned fabric and I can't imagine it's original, but it's an old one. It has some tiny spots of wear but is in overall nice condition.

It holds an interesting variety of threads. There are spools from Sea Island, B. N. & H Ltd. and the American Thread Co. There's an odd shaped flat wooden 'spool' as well. The drawer contains
some red marking threads by Clark, a packet of Martha Washington needles, a pair of steel scissors and a sterling silver panel band thimble. The little steel scissors measure 3 1/2" long and cut beautifully to the tips. The thimble is a pretty one with embossed panels and diamond knurling. It tests solid sterling silver but is unmarked except for the size (6).

The wooden stand
is 7 3/4" high and the base is 4 1/8 x 4 1/2". Gay Ann Rogers shows this stand on p. 165 (plate 132) of her book An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
