Antique Steel Birds Embroidery Scissors

Italian * Circa 1890s

These little steel scissors have long tail birds on each shank. They are Italian from the Campobasso region but are a very unusual pattern. The design is finer and the scrollwork thinner than usually seen.

The blades have intact points and they cut well.  The steel has darkened over the ages but the condition is nice with no rust or damage. They measure 3 5/8" long. A larger, more ornate Italian pair in this style are shown in Plate 53 of Sylvia Groves' book The History of Needlework Tools and Accessories.
