In the 1790s the Royal Mint had all but stopped producing copper coinage, and merchants across Britain filled the gap with their own halfpenny tokens, a series collectors now know as Conder tokens. Coventry's issue is one of the most evocative of them all, pairing the city's famous legend of Lady Godiva riding through the streets with the elephant and castle from the Coventry civic arms. This piece carries the lettered edge PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE OF ROBERT REYNOLDS & CO, placing it in the Dalton & Hamer Warwickshire 231 family, and its style and fabric are orthodox for the Lutwyche strikings of the issue. This is a handsome, honest example with a pleasing chocolate-brown patina. PRO BONO PUBLICO and the 1792 date are fully legible around the Godiva figure, with the horse's mane and musculature still visible, while the reverse reads COVENTRY HALFPENNY in full and the castle brickwork is sharp above a well-defined elephant. The denticled borders are visible most of the way round on both sides. There are some scattered light hairline scuffs in the fields, most apparent on the Godiva side.
