The Haas HA5C is one of the most widely used CNC rotary indexers in the industry, and finding a "very clean" standalone Haas control box (often referred to as the Servo Control or Brushless Rotary Control unit) along with its parameter setup is a solid find for small-shop productivity.
Depending on the generation of your control unit, the HA5C indexer operates with either a brush-type or brushless motor:

When pairing an HA5C rotary head to a standalone control box or directly to a Haas mill 4th-axis drive card, entering the correct parameters ensures accurate indexing, homing, and torque delivery.
Ratio / Steps per Degree: 90:1 gear ratio standard (90 revolutions of the worm drive equal 360circ of collet rotation).
Direction of Rotation: Configurable (CW or CCW positive angle rotation).
Max Speed: 100^circ/sec to 120^circ\/sec depending on drive voltage (115 VAC vs. 230 VAC).
Air Collet Closer Parameter (if equipped): M-code or relay dwell time tuned for pneumatic clamping/unclamping.
If operating the HA5C control unit alongside a non-Haas machine (or an older mill without a built-in 4th-axis drive):
Remote M-Code Trigger: Connect the 4-pin relay cable from your CNC mill's M-code output to the rear of the Haas controller.
Cycle Execution:
CNC sends M-code signal to close relay - Haas controller executes programmed rotation step - Haas controller signals "Fin" (Finish) back to CNC to resume machining.
Manual / Semi-Auto Mode: The front keypad allows standalone indexing without any CNC connection (great for dedicated drilling/milling jigs).
If you are inspecting or setting up this control unit:
Collet Drawbar & Air Cylinder: Test the pneumatic collet closer (if included) to ensure internal seals hold air pressure without leaking around the rotary union.
Worm Backlash Check: Manually verify input shaft backlash. The HA5C features an eccentric adjustment screw on the side to snug up the worm gear if any play is felt at the spindle nose.
Memory / Battery Check: Verify that the control box retains its parameter settings when powered off. (Internal backup battery may need replacing on older units if parameters revert to defaults).
