Der Einband ist leicht berieben, ansonsten ein sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. / The cover is slightly scuffed, but otherwise this is a very good, clean copy with no markings. -- (Excerpt:) FOREWORD In surveys of modern art, Francis Picabia is often presented as the anecdotal personality par excellence: more than one hundred-twenty automobiles, over a thousand paintings, wild par- ties, unbounded luxury, a big mouth... As with all important figures, here too the myth is an encumbrance to a well-founded understanding of the work. But in the case of Francis Picabia, the myth indeed forms a seamless whole with his life and work. The oeuvre is so wide-ranging. encompasses such a variety of "styles" and is so often averse to convention, that "improbable" and "inimitable" are also rather inadequate designations. Picabia represented as no one else, innovation purely for innovation's sake - the very essence of the avant-garde. When the epi- gone of post-impressionism throws away his "career" to put his talent at the service of ongoing provocation, there commences an era whose chapter-headings would not always logically fol- low. Picabia's life and work were a game over which he was the supreme arbiter - setting the rules and the stakes, with sheer pleasure as the principal goal. His work extracts itself from the habitual expectation of art history, that an oeuvre should seek and achieve a linear progres- sion. And given Picabia's preference for caprice over any sort of "growth", his elusive oeuvre may be said to have successfully attained its aim. With the years' passing, Picabia's work has become a reservoir of innumerable innocuous remakes. Such a fate has also befallen many of his avant-garde colleagues. With Picabia it is all the more striking, because of the reservoir's enormity and because the remakes are invariably so "pleasing" to the eye - a characteristic that his work may in no sense be accused of. But per- haps freedom in thought and painting has become an unattainable, disagreeable pursuit. In this sense, Picabia's unquiet - and disquieting - life and work, remain for us both a souvenir and an appeal. - Ronny Van de Velde.
