In the early 1900s, Halloween was a romantic, courtship-focused holiday in the USA, similar to Valentine’s Day, rather than a focus on fright. It served as a parlor game night centered on divination rituals—inspired by Irish/Scottish traditions—that allowed young people to playfully predict their future spouses, love lives, and marital status.
