The Anatomy of the Damage ...

When free-blown art glass is finished, the glassblower snaps the iron punty rod off the bottom, leaving a sharp scar. To make the globe stable, factories typically grind that circular area down flat and acid-etch or frost it so it sits evenly on a table or shelf.Because the glass is under stress at that specific junction, a hard impact or thermal shock can cause the entire center of the base—the pontil site—to fracture cleanly and pop out, leaving a hollow hole right through the bottom of the globe. And it appears, that this is exactly what happened.  Although, with the stand it is a stunning piece. A person who is artsy could use light to create a unique area in their home..
