First edition. Inscribed by the author: “For Orleane Manley with candid regards Arthur Huff Fauset. May 1938.” Fauset wrote this biography of Sojourner Truth as part of an uncompleted series of biographies of African American historical figures, organized by Benjamin Brawley. The work is an overview of Truth’s life, featuring excerpts from her speeches, and divided into three parts.
Arthur Huff Fauset (1899–1983) was an anthropologist, folklorist, and educator. Born in New Jersey to an African American father and white Jewish mother, Fauset earned his AB, MA, and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1927, he co-founded Black Opals—a literary magazine featuring work by African American Philadelphians—with Nellie Rathbone Bright. Fauset published widely in anthropology and folklore, and was also an author of fiction and children’s books. He remains best known for his anthropological writing, particularly his 1944 work Black Gods of the Metropolis: Negro Religious Cults of the Urban North. Fauset was also a dedicated activist holding leadership roles in several civil rights and education organizations, including the American Federation of Teachers, the National Negro Congress, and the United People’s Action Committee.
