Second edition. This biography of Brown includes his correspondence on antislavery activities, business, personal matters, and other subjects. The volume incorporates photo-transferred copies of several of Brown’s letters written in his own hand. Franklin Benjamin Sanborn (1831–1917) was a journalist and personal friend of John Brown, for whom he served as New England agent. Despite his initial opposition, Sanborn supported Brown’s 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry as one of the “Secret Six,” a group of private citizens who helped fund the operation. A resident of Concord, Mass., Sanborn was active in its famed community of writers and intellectuals.
