ISULARUM MOLUCCARUM Nova Descriptio - a very decorative and large original antique hand-coloured map of the Spice Islands (Moluccas), East Indies, Indonesia, published by Johannes Janssonius and Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam in 1638 in their Atlas Novus, Sive Descriptio Geographica Totius Orbis Terrarum. This large, highly detailed, and decorative map is in exceptionally good, clean condition. It is elaborately hand-coloured throughout, with the original colours remaining vibrant and attractive, as shown. The map features an exquisite title cartouche at the top centre, flanked by two compasses, as well as a scale cartouche in the lower centre, an elaborate vignette depicting native figures in traditional dress, and several sailing ships of various types and sea monsters, all beautifully hand-coloured. Latin text on the verso. The map measures approximately 22 x 19 inches (58 x 48 cm). A superb example of this rare map of the exotic Spice Islands from famous mapmakers, for collectors.
