This is an antique 1875 signed schoolgirl needlepoint sampler with red letters and numbers.

The frame it is in measures 16 3/4 inches high x 14 1/2 inches wide (42.5 cm x 36.8 cm). The sampler itself measures 13 3/4 inches high x 11 1/2 inches wide (34.9 cm x 29.2 cm).

I’m fairly certain the sampler is not original to the frame, as it is dated 1875 and the frame dates from the 1890s. Someone put the two together quite well though.

The piece is signed on the bottom what I believe to be:

The sampler looks to be fully intact. There is what looks like a darkish line going through the center of it, as if it was folded there at some point. There are a few scattered stains, such as in the top left corner in between the two A’s. There is also staining to most of the linen border going around it.

The frame has chipping in each corner along with scattered loss to the paint, tiny indentations, scratches and general wear. Still, it goes beautifully with the sampler giving it a great sense of age.

The glass is most likely original to the frame, as it is lightly bubbled and wavy. It does have a couple of tiny scratches on it though.

When they put the two together, they put a new backing and wire on.

It weighs 2 pounds 11 1/2 ounces (1.232 kg).
