INTRODUCTION
Creation of a system of 60cm gauge light railways behind the British, French, German and (later) American front lines during World War 1 was brought about by the changing nature of war itself. Previous European wars were fought by small professional armies, which carried their supplies with them or lived off the land. Most strategists expected the war which erupted in 1914 to follow a similar pattern. But twentieth century technology was to shatter all the carefully laid plans.
By November 1914 the initial rapid German advance through Belgium had been checked at the first battle of Ypres, and in the centre of France the German armies were held, almost at the gates of Paris, by the French at the battle of the Marne. But casualties on all sides were heavy, and the tactical commanders - if, not yet, their High Commands - had come to appreciate the power of the machine gun and the artillery piece. These rendered cavalry obsolete overnight, and could decimate attacking infantry in awesome numbers.
