This is the story of what officially was known as the East Cairo District of the Kentucky Division but more familiarly known as "The Mud Line." Railroaders, it seems, have nicknames for everything -and each other. The old St. Louis Lead over which we will begin a fanciful journey to Cairo is more familiarly known as "The Buckskin Lead." Down on Campbell Street where the railroad maintained an incline to receive cars from the Ohio River ferry was known as "The Boat Yard." The old Louisville Division was known in 1904 as "The Narrow Escape Division," the East Cairo Division "The Last Chance." Even today, after almost fifty years have past since the old TNT plant was closed, on the Paducah & Louisville we still call the local serving the AEC plant "The KOW."
