INTRODUCTION
Did you ever wonder how the west was won? I don't mean just the "Far West", hut anyplace west of the Atlantic coast. Some will say it was on horseback, a wagon train and even on foot. However, a review of the history of development of the United States will show that real, meaningful development occurred as railroads were established. As you "follow the rails" in Ruth Trueblood Eckes' new book (SPARKS, SMOKE AND CINDERS), you will feel some of the joy and some of the heartbreak experienced by railroaders over the years.
There are many stories which could be published from workers on the eastern railroads, but partly because Ruth Eckes lives and worked on western lines, those stories are more difficult for her to obtain. Perhaps readers of her books will encourage employees or retirees from such lines, or their predecessors, as New York Central, Pennsylvania, Erie, Nickel Plate, N&W, B&O, etc. to submit their stories. Those railroads were just as instrumental in the development and the history of this country as were the western lines. Not only the companies themselves have disbanded, the employees have also died or gone into other work. It is important that their stories he preserved. You will find the majority of the stories in this book came from the western lines.
