he paper label must be one of the most abundant of art forms and, taking into account the number of people it reaches, one of the most influential. Most labels are printed for use in their country of origin only, but when a product is exported its printed label can travel to the four corners of the world. By road, rail, sea, and even by camel, the art of the label has been taken far afield on tins of cookies, mustard and canned fruits. For many people, this would have been their first sight of color printing. Many labeled products were distributed in foreign parts by the European powers of the nineteenth century. At first, the colorful and exotic imported brands must have caused much interest abroad, since they reflected a very different way of life. But over time the products became part of the daily scene, so much so that when the makers of Camp coffee decided to alter the label design there was an immediate outcry in India.
