HISTORY: ROLAND "ROLY" JARVIS WAS BORN IN HAMILTON ONTARIO IN 1899 AND WAS AN ACTIVE DECOY CARVER IN THE 1920s (2). ACCORDING TO PAUL BRISCO IN HIS BOOK WATERFOWL DECOYS OF SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO, JARVIS "WORKED FOR WESTINGHOUSE FOR 35 YEARS, WHERE HE KNEW IVAR FERNLUND AND JIM BARR. HE AND HIS BROTHER HARRY AND SCOTTY McCALLUM SHOT WITH FRED REDMOND, WHO LIVED ON THE BEACH. IN THE THIRTIES, WITH WESTINGHOUSE SHUT DOWN THREE DAYS A WEEK, HE HAD LOTS OF TIME TO SHOOT AND CARVE DECOYS. HIS BLACK DUCKS OFFER A HAUNTING SILHOUETTE, LONG AND SLENDER, WITH TACK EYES AND FINE SCRATCH PAINT. THEY ARE VERY LIGHT AND WELL HOLLOWED, WITH A THIN (ONE-QUARTER TO THREE-EIGHTH-INCH) BOTTOM BOARD (1)."


IN ONTARIO DECOY II, BERNIE GATES WRITES THAT "ROLAND'S FIRST DECOY WAS A BLACK DUCKFROM A PATTERN LOANED BY A MR. FRED REDMAN OF HAMILTON (2)."
