This outstanding, 19th century, Sioux Quilled Sheath measures approx. 8 1/2" long and 2 1/2" wide at its top edge. The Knife appears to be of the same age as the Sheath and measures approx 9 1/4" long overall with a 5 3/8" long, hand forged blade. The blade features a full length tang and the hard wood handle is affixed to the blade by 2 pins. The Knife shows significant, honest use wear but no damage or repairs of any kind.

    This wonderful Sioux Knife Sheath is made of thick and rather stiff buffalo hide and is sinew sewn by hand. The front of the Sheath is fully quilled and features traditional geometric patterns. The quillwork is executed using colors of white and yellow with light purple accents. There is a lane of rawhide drops approx. 2” below the opening at the top and each rawhide drop is finished with a very early style, rolled tin dangler. The Sheath retains its original, hide belt hanger at the top.

    The Knife is simply fantastic! It is made in the form of a smaller size Bowir Knife with a Clip Point resulting in an exceptionally sharp stabbing tip. The blade is hand forged and unmarked showing age appropriate surface darkening and evidence of having been carefully sharpened over the decades but never over sharpened thus retaining its very attractive, classic clip point Bowie Knife shape.

    This very rare and simply wonderful, ca1880’s Sioux Quill Decorated Buffalo Hide Sheath is in very good condition. All of the hide elements are well preserved, sound and strong with a very old, hand sewn repair to the tip of the Sheath where the sharp point and near razor sharp end of the blade likely pierced the sheath at some point a long time ago. The quillwork is very attractive and generally well preserved with some scattered, lost slats as can be seen in the scans below. All of the rawhide drops and the tin cone danglers are present as is the original belt hanger.

    The Knife is also in very good condition with no physical damage and no repairs of any kind. The cutting edge of the blade shows evidence of careful sharpening over many years but the Knife was never over-sharpened and the blade retains its original shape and form. There is a minuscule nick at the apex of the clipped point although it is easier felt than seen and the sharpened edge is VERY sharp – this would be a rather deadly weapon when used to hunt or to fight!! The hardwood handle is darkened from decades of use / handling but intact and well preserved.
