Double Sided Enamel Sign
"West End Hospital
For
Nervous Diseases"
This "West End Hospital For Nervous Diseases" double sided enamel sign is in "as found" condition.
The West End Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System, Paralysis and Epilepsy opened at 73 Welbeck Street, London in 1878, the name was changed in 1915 to the West End Hospital for Nervous Diseases.
Dr. Herbert Tibbits, its founder, was an advocate for the use of electricity as a treatment for conditions of the nervous system, the Hospital was also a pioneer in the psychiatric field.
In 1955 Its name was changed to the West End Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, it closed in 1972.
There are the usual areas of enamel loses and "nibbles" to the edges and around the mounting holes, there are also small patches of loss to the body on both sides.
Part of one of the original brackets is present.
There are also the scuffs, stains, marks and scratches that you would expect from an item of this age and use.
I have tried to show the condition in the photographs.
The black impressed lettering is still clear and legible and the colours have a good depth to them, the red arrow to both sides has faded.
The sign also has a fair gloss.
I have tried to show the condition in the photographs.
This is a fantastic piece of medial history which would display superbly and grace any collection.
It measures 46 cm (18 inches) by 30 cm (12 inches).
