Portable Typewriter.

This "Blickensderfer No.7" portable typewriter dates from around 1906, it has its' case and it is in "as found" condition.
In 1891, George C. Blickensderfer (1850-1917) invented a small portable writing machine that featured the ability to change type styles at will, with an interchangeable type head. This unique design formed the basis of a typewriter manufacturing business that lasted almost thirty years.
The typewriter has retained much of its' black japanned paint to the body, however, there are losses in places, mainly to the space bar, as well as the marks, scuffs and scratches that you would associate with a machine of this age.
The plated and exposed metal work has some of its' finish, but there are losses and rust marks
The applied plaque on the front of the machine has "Blickensderfer 7, Newcastle-On Tyne, Made In U.S.A." impressed in to it, there is a further plaque to the side with Patent dates.
The machine has the serial number "104509".
All of the keys are present, the letters, numbers and symbols are still clear and legible, however, there is fading in places.
There are no chips or cracks to the keys.
The keys do depress and this moves the print head as they should.
The "Caps" and "Fig" keys move the print head up, but it doesn't return when the "Fig" key is used.
The carriage moves along when typing and when the space bar is used.
The typewriter is mounted on a heavy wooden base and has its' bent wood cover, this has a surface crack to the front, but it feels strong and sturdy.
The wood has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina, the leather handle is missing form the front, but the side catches are working.
