Offered here is a reproductive remarque/proof etching after a painting by the French artist Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891) apparently known as "Two Cavaliers Drinking" which shows a pair of cavaliers polishing off some drinks while still on horseback outside an inn. The print is signed in the plate "Meissonier 1876" which is when the painting was made by Meissonier, not when the etching was created.
The etching has a remarque (the small portrait of a man) in the lower left corner below the main image, a sign of a premium, early state print run. The print also has a pencil signature, "A. Fauna", below the image on the right. The name may or may not be a real person since in the 19th century when there was a need to create many reproductive etchings after a famous and popular artist, such as Meissonier was at the time, many etchers would be hired and would sign with a pseudonym or fictional classic-sounding names. "A. Fauna" etched Meissonier's most famous military and high-society scenes.
The dimensions of the sheet are 18 3/4 inches (height) by 14 5/8 inches (width.
